Samir Amin has written a shelf full of books, many of which are compilations of articles he wrote. I have a shelf of them, including these compilations. Since these are compilations and not purpose written books one finds less new, and most are of Samir Amin reiterating his core messages, occasionally to new topics of with new perspectives. “Empire of Chaos” is a 1992 book, which was translated from French. A few notes from it:
“The powers of the West are, in principle, neither for nor against democracy, neither for nor against peace. They are driven by an all-determining fixation on maintaining an imperialist order that reserves to them the right to exploit all the riches of the planet for their own profit to the detriment of its other peoples. If this order can be better served by a “democracy”, they are for it, but they never hesitate to support or even install a dictator if this better serves their needs. If peace does not menace their imperial order, they are for peace. If it does, they choose a war fierce as is necessary. The people of the periphery, who are the victims of this never ending imperialism, have no choice but to struggle to bring it to an end by any means necessary.” (p. 99-100)
“The strategic objective of the Western powers in the Middle East has been, for half a century, to control the flow and oil, and that means maintenance of disunity among the Arabs and the superarmament of Israel.” (p.112)
